परिचय

माइका एक स्तरित सिलिकेट खनिज समूह है जो पूर्ण बेसल क्लीवेज द्वारा विशिष्ट है, जिससे यह पतली, लचीली, अक्सर पारदर्शी शीटों में विभाजित हो सकता है। प्लास्टिक उद्योग में, माइका को संरचनात्मक पॉलिमर घटक के रूप में कम महत्व दिया जाता है, बल्कि एक कार्यात्मक खनिज भराव और सुदृढ़ीकरण योजक के रूप में महत्व दिया जाता है जो चयनित फॉर्मूलेशन में कठोरता, आयामी स्थिरता, गर्मी प्रतिरोध, अवरोध प्रदर्शन और सतह उपस्थिति में सुधार करता है।

इसी समय, माइका की सीमाएं हैं। इसका प्लेटलेट-आधारित सुदृढ़ीकरण तब सबसे अच्छा काम करता है जब कण अच्छी तरह फैले और उन्मुख हों, जिसका अर्थ है खराब फैलाव → तनाव सांद्रता और कमजोर यांत्रिक लाभ → सतह उपचार का उपयोग, सावधानीपूर्वक कंपाउंडिंग और अनुकूलित कण-आकार वितरण। एक और महत्वपूर्ण सीमा यह है कि माइका एक सार्वभौमिक अवरोध भराव नहीं है → यह टॉरच्युअस-पाथ डिफ्यूजन में सुधार कर सकता है, लेकिन यह ऑक्सीजन-संवेदनशील पैकेजिंग के लिए समर्पित अवरोध पॉलिमर या मेटलाइज्ड संरचनाओं से मेल नहीं खाता → इसलिए इसका उपयोग मुख्य रूप से तकनीकी प्लास्टिक में होता है न कि मांग वाले खाद्य-पैकेजिंग अवरोध परतों में।

माइका का व्यापक इतिहास प्रारंभिक सजावटी और इन्सुलेटिंग उपयोगों से आधुनिक औद्योगिक कंपाउंडिंग तक फैला है, और इसका भविष्य परिवहन में हल्के वजन, विद्युतीकरण, अग्नि सुरक्षा आवश्यकताओं और खनिज-आधारित भरावों की निरंतर मांग से आकार लेने की संभावना है जो लागत को प्रदर्शन के साथ संतुलित करते हैं। हालांकि, स्थिरता बहस केंद्रीय बनी हुई है, क्योंकि माइका सीमित भूवैज्ञानिक जमा से खनन किया जाता है और इसे पुनर्नवीनीकृत खनिज धाराओं, सिंथेटिक प्लेटलेट्स और जैव-आधारित या कम-कार्बन समग्र रणनीतियों के साथ प्रतिस्पर्धा करनी चाहिए।

माइका का उपयोग सदियों से किया जा रहा है क्योंकि यह स्वाभाविक रूप से पतली, अलग करने योग्य शीटों में पाया जाता है जो पारदर्शी खिड़कियों, गर्मी प्रतिरोधी पैनलों और इन्सुलेटिंग इंसर्ट के रूप में कार्य कर सकती हैं। ऐतिहासिक उपयोगों में खिड़कियों के लिए "मस्कोवी ग्लास" और बाद में विशेष विद्युत अनुप्रयोग शामिल थे जहां इसकी डाइइलेक्ट्रिक शक्ति और थर्मल प्रतिरोध विशेष रूप से मूल्यवान हो गए।
