はじめに
デンプン系 バイオプラスチック は、トウモロコシ、ジャガイモ、キャッサバ、小麦、米、その他のデンプン豊富なバイオマスから得られる再生可能な多糖類であるデンプンから、全体または一部が由来するプラスチック材料の広範なファミリーです。プラスチック工学において、デンプンは可塑化および熱処理後に 熱可塑性デンプン (TPS) として使用されるか、他の 生分解性ポリマー との複合材料における主要ブレンド成分として使用され、加工性、強度、および最終用途性能を向上させます。
その魅力は、再生可能性、低い原材料コスト、生分解性の可能性、および押出成形、射出成形、熱成形、フィルム変換などの従来のプラスチック機械との適合性 の稀有な組み合わせにあります。一方で、デンプン系システムは水分感受性、限定的な耐熱性、および特性のばらつきという技術的制約が残るため、商業製品のほとんどは純粋なデンプンではなく、エンジニアリングされたブレンドおよび充填配合物です。
デンプン系 バイオプラスチック への関心は、使い捨てプラスチックに対する規制圧力、堆肥化可能な包装の需要、および低炭素原料の探索とともに高まっています。その開発は現在、包装フィルム、袋、農業用マルチフィルム、緩衝発泡体、使い捨て食器、特殊なバイオメディカルまたはアクティブ包装材料に及び、架橋、反応性ブレンド、ナノフィラー、抗菌配合における継続的な革新が行われています。
歴史と開発
デンプンは人類が知る最も古い工業用 バイオポリマー の一つですが、現代のプラスチック材料への変革は、可塑化の概念とポリマー加工設備の開発後にようやく現れました。初期のデンプンプラスチックは脆さと吸水性に制約されていましたが、その後の研究で、デンプン粒がグリセロールやソルビトールなどの 可塑剤 の存在下で熱と水によって崩壊し、成形可能な材料である TPS が生成されることが示されました。
商業的に関連するデンプンプラスチックは、デンプンが他の堆肥化可能なポリマー、特に脂肪族ポリエステルとブレンドされることで進展し、コスト低減と加工性・使用性能の向上を両立させました。これにより、デンプンは実験室的好奇心から包装および農業用途における実用的な「ブレンド成分」へと移行しました。
最近の研究は以下に焦点を当てています：
- 反応性デンプン誘導体（例：ジアルデヒドデンプン）による、より強固なネットワーク形成と自己修復挙動。
- アクティブ包装：デンプンフィルムに天然の抗菌剤または 酸化防止剤 を担持。
- 天然繊維および鉱物複合材料：剛性、寸法安定性、熱性能の向上。
- 廃棄物由来のデンプンストリーム：食品加工残渣などを利用し、原料競合を低減し循環性を向上。
