（PTT）ポリトリメチレンテレフタレート

はじめに

ポリトリメチレンテレフタレート (PTT) は半結晶性の 芳香族ポリエステル で、弾力性、回復性、柔らかさ、耐薬品性の組み合わせで知られ、カーペット糸、繊維、特定のエンジニアリング用途で特に価値がある。1,3-プロパンジオールとテレフタル酸またはジメチルテレフタレートから合成され、PET や PBT と同じ広範なポリエステルファミリーに属するが、鎖構造により伸縮と回復の独自のバランスを持つ。

PTT は 1941 年に初めて合成・特許化されたが、コスト効率の高い 1,3-プロパンジオールの工業開発とポリエステル加工が可能になり、大規模生産が可能になったことで商業的重要性が後になって現れた。現代の PTT は従来の石油化学系ポリエステルとして、また一部のグレードでは 1,3-プロパンジオールが糖由来の中間体などの再生可能原料から生産される部分バイオベース材料として使用される。

PTT はプラスチックおよび繊維のエコシステムにおいて中間的な位置を占める：PET ほど硬くなく、エラスタンほど柔らかくなく、PET や PP ほど広く商品価格化されていないが、回復性、感触、染色性、耐汚染性 が絶対的なコストより重要となる独自の性能ニッチを提供する。その将来は、繊維およびカーペット市場での用途拡大と、循環性の向上、化石炭素強度の低減、バイオベース原料へのアクセスの拡大という 2 つの並行するトレンドによって形作られる。

歴史と開発

PTT は 1940 年代初頭に実験室および特許化学として誕生したが、1,3-プロパンジオール生産の経済性がまだ有利ではなかったため、数十年間は比較的特殊なポリエステルとして留まっていた。ポリエステルメーカーと化学企業が、このポリマーの分子幾何学が PET や PBT とは異なる特性プロファイル、特に繊維における高い弾性回復と柔らかい手触りを生み出すことを認識したことで、商業的関心が高まった。

最も重要な工業的マイルストーンは、精製テレフタル酸と 1,3-プロパンジオールに基づくルート化学のスケーリングであり、トランスエステル化およびエステル化-重縮合プロセスを含む。工業時代において PTT はカーペット繊維開発と密接に関連付けられ、回復性、容易な染色性、永久的な圧縮に対する耐性により、特定の用途で ナイロン や PET のプレミアム代替品として提供された。

PTT はまた、プラットフォーム化学のケーススタディとなった。その開発は、原料経済性、重合技術、最終用途需要が一致したときに、ポリエステルファミリーメンバーがニッチスペシャリティからより広範な材料プラットフォームに再位置づけされる方法を示した。そのプラットフォームロジックは後に、幅広いエンジニアリング用途向けのブレンド、複合材料、ナノコンポジット を支えた。
