Kieselguhr は天然に存在する高度に多孔質の珪藻土であり、化石化した珪藻のケイ質骨格を主成分とする珪藻土としても知られる。プラスチックおよび補助剤のバリューチェーンでは、主に充填剤、アンチブロック剤、機能性増量剤として使用され、隣接産業では濾過助剤、吸収剤、断熱材としてより広く知られている。

その工業的重要性は、低い嵩密度、高い多孔性、化学的に不活性な性質、および大きな内部表面積の組み合わせによるもので、これらがポリマー、コーティング、ゴム、建設資材、化学システム全体の加工および性能向上の役割に役立つ。同時に、キーゼルグールは鉱物ベースで鉱床から採掘され、通常生分解性ではないため、より広範な持続可能性の議論の一部であるが、特定の配合では材料効率の向上、密度の低減、またはより炭素集約的な添加剤の代替に寄与する場合がある。

歴史と開発

キーゼルグールは19世紀に工業利用され、その吸収剤特性が爆薬および濾過に活用された。最もよく知られる歴史的用途は、ダイナマイトにおけるニトログリセリンの不活性吸収剤としての役割であり、アルフレッド・ノーベルに関連付けられ、現在もこの材料の工業史で頻繁に引用される。

時を経て、その用途は爆薬および清澄化媒体から、より広範な材料加工へと拡大した。20世紀までに、キーゼルグールは飲料濾過、食品および化学加工、断熱材、ならびに紙、塗料、プラスチック、ゴムの充填剤として確立した。この多様化は、単純な吸収性から、粒子サイズ、焼成状態、純度、表面化学を最終用途要件に適合させるように調整したエンジニアリング性能への移行を反映している。

化学構造と主要特性

キーゼルグールは、主に結晶性シリカではなく非晶質シリカからなる微視的な化石化した珪藻 frustule で構成される。その特徴的な多孔質構造により、見かけ密度が非常に低く、 void volume が高いため、濾過、吸着、および軽量増量剤としての用途の中心となっている。

主要な技術的特徴

• 高い多孔性 → 大きな内部細孔ネットワーク → 効果的な液体吸収、濾過、マット化挙動。
• 低い嵩密度 → 軽量充填効果 → 特定の複合材およびコーティングの密度低減。
• 化学的不活性 → 多くの系での反応性が限定的 → 安定した機能性添加剤として有用。
• 耐熱性 → 断熱および高温用途への適合性 → 特に焼成または精製グレードで。
• 研磨性微細構造 → 穏やかな機械的作用 → 研磨および洗浄製品に有用。

実用的限界と回避策

• 高性能プラスチックにおける補強効率の低さ → 粒子形状が多孔質で不規則なため、繊維状または板状充填剤と同等の強度向上を提供しない → 機械的補強が主目的の場合はカップリング剤、ハイブリッド充填剤パッケージを使用するか、タルク、炭酸カルシウム、ガラス繊維、またはマイカに切り替える。
• 粉塵および吸入暴露リスク → 非常に微細な粉末は取扱中に呼吸性粉塵を発生させる可能性がある → 密閉移送システム、局所排気、適切な呼吸保護を使用する；多くの生産者は精製または造粒グレードも提供している。
• バリア改善の限界 → 多孔質シリカ構造は板状鉱物のような連続した曲がりくねった経路を形成しない → アンチブロック、レオロジー、伸展性が重要で、ガスバリア性能が主要件でない場合にのみ使用する。
